Envy
Lily’s husband had a really good job and she didn’t work anymore because she wanted to stay home with the kids. But when Tony came home and acted all important she would seethe. And when she looked at the bank accounts and thought how he made all the money she felt like a loser. She tried to reason with herself. She didn’t want to hire a nanny or put the kids in daycare, she really didn’t. She just wanted a fat paycheck for her troubles. Was that too much to ask? Later, when he left her for a partner in his firm and she sued the shit out of him, she felt better about everything. She’d earned that money.

Greed
She was the second of four children, Kathy, and her father’s favorite. She hated sharing a room with her sister and dreamed of living in a big house. In college she met a rich guy and her eyes lit up with dollar signs and soon after, they married. The decades wore on and she grew to dislike her siblings, because they weren’t really rich. She also didn’t like to visit their homes, as they weren’t as nice as hers. Eventually, she became estranged from most everyone. At fifty, sitting on her couch, looking out at her pool, she thought, I only have paid friends. My maid, my driver, my nanny. But she was OK with it.
