Mr. MacTavish is dead. His poodle anxiously stands guard over him in the courtyard. They’re wearing matching red tartan jackets, as usual, but it doesn’t seem right to goof on them now. The ambulance attendants in white uniforms arrive but are in no rush. The cops joke about not being caught dead dressed like your dog, then notice we’re listening and shoo us kids away. We found him; why can’t we stay? What a gyp. So we go up to the roof and watch the kaleidoscope of blue and white hats orbiting the red tartan punch lines. The ambulance finally takes Mr. MacTavish away. Later, we’ll feel bad about laughing at him when he was alive, but only a little.
Larry Mellor grew up in NYC aspiring to write the Great American Novel until life interrupted his plans. Currently residing in Norfolk, VA, he will soon retire from a career in financial management. Finally out of excuses to procrastinate, he has begun writing again after a thirty-five year hiatus.
