"Fuji apples are from Fuji, that's how they got their name."
He proclaimed this at a dinner party where apples were a main ingredient in many of the dishes. I had the heart, but didn't want to tell him that there is no such place as Fuji, that he was probably thinking of Fiji, and that is not where they are from, anyhow. I could have told him that they originated in Japan and are a cross between a Red Delicious and some other apple that I don’t think exists anymore. Everyone accepted his Fuji statement as fact as he was the host, and I enjoyed knowing that I was the smartest person in the room on the subject. Instead, I said, "Has anyone ever had a Grapple?" and they all looked at me as if they were wondering why this person, in the long, puffy black dress with her hair done up in a bun and pearls around her neck, like a woman in all the British dinner party films, but not suitable for this one, was speaking. "It's a grape flavored apple. A Fuji, to be exact." They all shook their heads up, down, and made an O with their mouths while a soft 'ooh' came out, as if they now knew why I was bringing up a wrestling move when the topic was food. "Is that from Fuji, too?" someone asked and I gave an all lips smile and politely said, "I doubt it."
